The purpose of the Troon Men’s Shed is to provide recreational facilities and advance the social needs, health and well being of men of all ages and backgrounds living in Troon and surrounding areas by:
- Creating, developing and maintaining a facility, namely a Men’s Shed.
- Offering opportunities for men in the Troon area to meet and undertake creative, physical, purposeful and recreational activities of their choice.
- Reducing isolation of men in the area thus contributing to their physical and mental wellbeing.
- Developing the capacity of men in the Troon area to share their skills and knowledge with others in the community.
The first steps in forming a Men’s Shed in Troon were taken in March 2024, and in June 2024 we became a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) regulated by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), Scottish Charity number SC053474. We are govererned by our constitution with a board of Trustees appointed.
Until we have our own premises we are meeting weekly on a Monday afternoon from 2pm to 3.30pm in The Lighthouse Christian Centre for a social meeting with occasional guest speakers as well as arranging some visits to places of interest. We also get involved with community activities and have carried out DIY type projects for Ayrshire Cancer Support, Muirhead Tenants and Residents Association and the Meadowgreen Centre, as well as helping at Wintertainment, Troon Round Table Fireworks and Santa Float. A calendar of our forthcoming meetings, events and activities can be found using this link.
Membership is free and open to any man aged 18 or over who is currently resident in Troon or surrounding areas who supports the purpose and the activities which the organisation exists to promote. Click the “Join Us” button below if you want to become a member, or “Contact Us” for more information.
We are working to get our own premises so that we can have a meeting space as well as workshop facilities, and in January 2026 submitted a Community Asset Transfer application to acquire the old Hosiery Park Pavilion changing rooms on Brodie Avenue from South Ayrshire Council. Once we have obtained the building it will require development to develop it into a suitable facility for us to use as a men’s shed and this will be subject to obtaining the necessary funding. More information about the Hosiery Park Pavilion project is available by clicking the button below:
What is a Men’s Shed?
Men’s Sheds typically have three core features:
- A practical space where members can take part in activities, such as woodwork, gardening, crafts etc.
- A social space where members can relax, grab a cuppa and chat to others.
- An inclusive and friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome and supported.
The Scottish Men’s Sheds Association have made a video which explains what a Men’s Shed is:
